“Range limited only by food supplies”→

Wikipedia:

The US Navy has a total of 18 Ohio-class submarines which consist of 14 ballistic missile submarines (SSBNs), and four cruise missile submarines (SSGNs). The SSBN submarines are also known as “Trident” submarines, and provide the sea-based leg of the U.S. nuclear triad.

I’ve been doing a lot of reading on submarines lately1 and wanted to look up what the modern technology the US Navy is using looks like. One of the ‘quick facts’2 that Wikipedia offers caught my eye:

Range: Limited only by food supplies

I’ve got to wonder – why hasn’t the Navy done more research into hydroponics? You’d think they’d be all over that sort of thing, extending the operational range of their submarines.

  1. There’ll be a book review about that eventually, don’t you worry.
  2. Or whatever they’re called
